The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has finally started work on two multilevel parking sites in its area. According to NDMC officials, at least two basement levels have already been dug at the Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Sarojini Nagar sites while work will start at Kasturba Gandhi Marg after the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) gives its approval.

Foundation stones for the three multilevel parking sites were laid in December 2007, after which work was expected to begin by September 2008 as nine months had been earmarked for getting the required approvals. "But the work got delayed because clearances did not come through,'' said an NDMC official. The civic body is now expecting to complete the project by June 2010.

The parking lot at KG Marg will be the largest among the three sites. It will hold about 1400 cars, followed by BKS Marg with a capacity of 1200 cars and Sarojini Nagar with space for about 700 cars. NDMC officials say that though the project was not meant to be completed before the Commonwealth Games, the sites will be ready by then. "The project mainly aims at easing the parking situation in these areas,'' said another NDMC official.
